How long do I have to sue?

In both Ontario and British Columbia, the basic limitation period is 2 years from the day you discovered (or ought to have discovered) the claim.

There are important exceptions — demands for payment of a demand loan, claims against municipalities with short notice requirements, and ultimate limitation periods (15 years in both provinces). If you are near the 2-year mark, act immediately: filing the claim stops the clock.
